Colette Aliman is a creative researcher working within the fields of Design and Art. In 2017 she moved from New York City to attend the Contextual Design Masters at Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Colette finds sound knowledge a methodology to help understand the most complex topics society engages with daily into design and sound art. Her topics of interest and research include multi-species-culture(s) sonic intersections, raising awareness of citizen’s choice in a product’s sound design, and speculative R&D in the future of the industrial revolution soundscapes. Screen to Soundscape Collective ×Link to demonstration of Phase 1 → Watch here Project website → screentosoundscape.com Screen-to-Soundscape adopts an experimental approach to re-imagining screen readers in order to address the current limitations for blind and visually impaired users. The goal is to develop a free and open-source explorative tool that transforms a screen into an immersive soundscape, with a strong focus on providing rich, descriptive alt-text for images and maps. Using open-source computer vision algorithms, our system will analyze visual elements to generate detailed and customizable alt-text tailored to user preferences, offering a more comprehensive understanding of visual content. Additionally, the prototype will feature spatial audio, using multiple layered voices to read out the content, ideally enhancing users’ navigation and interaction with digital content. Part of the process integrated co-creation sessions with a group of Assistive Technology Specialists who are visually impaired or blind. This project continues into 2025, consisting of three more co-creation sessions for finalization. |
